On the edge of the Belgian Kalmthout you will find the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. This route takes you on two hiking trails right through the nature reserve. Go out and enjoy the peace and space in this area full of vast heaths, forests and other natural beauty.
Heath plains and dunes
The starting point of this route is on the edge of Kalmthout. From here you follow the hiking trails Schaap en Duin over the Kalmthoutse Heide. On the first part of the route you can enjoy heaths, forests, fens and dunes. You will pass the fen Putse Moer, a swampy area that is located on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. This area was drained in the 18th century to be able to cut peat and now you will find a fen. At the height of this area, you can exchange the Schaap hiking trail for the Duin hiking trail. This path also takes you past heath plains, but also along impressive dune areas, wet heathland and meadows.
The Stappersven
Another fen you can enjoy on this route is the Stappersven. At the edge of the water you can enjoy beautiful views. The landscape here consists of drifting dunes, dry and moist heaths, marshes and birch forests. You end your trip back on the edge of Kalmthout.
Border park the Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide
During this tour you will get to know part of the Kalmthoutse Heide, but there is much more to discover in this beautiful nature reserve. The Grenspark de Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide is about 6000 hectares in total, so you won't be out of here quickly. Here you will find varied landscapes and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
